    Scugog Arts is excited to announce the second year of our Spring Arts festival, small town BIG, will be taking place this year from Saturday, May 6th to Saturday, May 13th, 2023.

     Small Town BIG is a wonderful culmination of all the vibrant art, artists and presenters here in Scugog! We have a week packed with arts, music, theater, and more, starting off with the Lake Scugog Studio Tour on May 6th. We have inspiring art demos with local artists, Linda Virio and Brenda Montgomery, and Barn Quilt Painting in the Scugog Arts Space lane way. The Wanted is performing an outdoor concert at Two Blokes Cider, and Elvira Kurt and Girls Nite Out are putting on a comedy show just for us, on May 12th at Town Hall Theatre! Visit Scugog Shores Museum on May 10th to see what Theatre on the Ridge is up to. Join Dr. Amy Barron at the Scugog Memorial Public Library on May 11th for her lecture on ‘The Dawn of Writing.’ 

    There is something happening every day, from Saturday May 6th to Saturday May 13th 2023, and we have something for everyone. Check out the full line-up at www.scugogarts.ca/small-town-big/ We can’t wait to see you there!

  • Brain Waves Cafe

    Intended for adults and seniors.
    Main Branch.
    Registration required.

    An informal monthly drop-in Café for 1.5 hours on the second Tuesday of the month for persons with cognitive (memory) change and their care partners, family and friends. This program involves stimulating conversation, social interaction, support and an opportunity to participate in engaging activities in a dementia friendly atmosphere. Coffee, tea and light refreshments available free of charge. Hosted in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region.

    Whitby 55+ Recreation Services provides programs for adults age 55+ to learn new skills, access resources and make connections. Choose from a variety of activities, including fitness programs, social opportunities, seminars and more. At 55+ Recreation, our purpose is to enhance the quality of life for people 55 and older through recreational programs, classes, services and volunteer opportunities. Benefits of membership include:

    - A variety of drop-in recreation programs such as Bingo, Cards, Darts and Scrabble,

    - Reasonably priced, adult 55+ focused courses in fitness, creative arts, dance, computers, and general interest programs,

    - Wellness and lifestyle programs,

    - Special events throughout the year,

    - Mingles, the on-site cafe with hot meals for purchase,

    - Discounted health club membership at the Whitby Civic Recreation Complex for members 60 years and older,

    Earn volunteer hours at the library! We are looking for enthusiastic youth in grades 7-12 to join our new Teen Advisory Groups (TAG). TAG members will have a say in library programs and services for teens, assist with children's programs, learn leadership skills, and more!

    Students who attend TAG meetings will receive additional volunteer opportunities throughout the year!

  • Summer Union Cemetery Tours
    The Oshawa Museum is proud to continue its partnership with Oshawa Union Cemetery in offering monthly cemetery tours May through August.
     
    Join the Oshawa Museum on the second Saturday afternoon in May, June, July and August to tour through Oshawa’s largest cemetery, Union Cemetery. Each month, a different section or theme will be explored; Oshawa Museum guides share stories of well-known citizens and of everyday people who made Oshawa the community it is. The tours begin at 2pm at the front gates of Union Cemetery.
     
    Cost: $5/person or free for members of the Oshawa Historical Society.
    This tour runs rain or shine!
    It is recommended that participants park at the nearby Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex (99 Thornton Road South) as parking at Union Cemetery is very limited (5 minute walk)
